Spatiotemporal Studies for Voices, Spaces, Microphones and Computer (2011)

by Ross Birdwise

total running time: 20:42

featuring the voices of DB Boyko, Ross Birdwise, Soressa Gardner and Kajin Goh

This project takes as its subject the human voice and its relationship to space and time and electronic music production. The project began as a series of solo vocal improvisations recorded in a variety of different spaces with different microphones and microphone techniques. I was interested in how different spaces and recording conditions would color the voices of a variety of improvising vocalists who were often using extended vocal techniques to create additional "effects".

I was also interested in seeing how I could further shape the recorded voices in terms of pitch, timbre, texture, duration, rhythm, space and time with digital effects and extensive "microscopic" editing. I wanted to shape the material into new vocal/electronic pieces that would create ambiguous spaces and times and other disorienting effects, in some ways an audio equivalent of some of the spatiotemporal manipulations you might see in Cubist or Futurist artworks.

The work was influenced by some of the work on space and time by philosophers Henri Bergson and Gilles Deleuze, my experiences as a video artist, improvising vocalist and electronic musician, Cubism, Futurism, early music, dub, hip hop, noise, minimal techno, and free improvisation; specifically musicians such as Ami Yoshida, King Tubby, Meredith Monk, Flying Lotus, Ricardo Villalobos, Vladislav Delay, Steve Reich, La Monte Young, J Dilla, Raionbashi, Mouthus and Perotin.
